Academic Program   Partner List
While space exploration is the theme at the Space Exploration Academies, it is not an overriding factor for all coursework. Students are expected to develop strong skills in all academic areas and demonstrate positive character development. To these ends, the Space Exploration Academies focus on experiential learning and community service. The Space Exploration Academies set high expectations for students, staff, and faculty. The school founders strongly believe that no school is successful until EVERY student is successful.

Upon enrollment at the Space Exploration Academies, each student works with school faculty and staff to develop an Individualized Academic Plan. This plan allows each student to receive a personalized education experience that is tailored to his or her interests and abilities.

Class sizes do not typically exceed 20 students. This allows our faculty members to deliver personalized instruction to each student. Junior Space Exploration Academy (JSEA) offers self-contained instruction for grades 6 - 8. This method of instruction places each student in a small-sized class with one teacher for all subject areas.

Students need ample time to learn. To achieve excellence, students at the Space Exploration Academies are offered extended learning opportunities beyond the regular school day.

It is not satisfactory to excel in academics alone. At the Space Exploration Academies, students must demonstrate strong character development and a commitment to supporting their communities. The Space Exploration Academies work with the local community to ensure that every student actively participates in community service opportunities.

In recognition of the need for higher quality schools, the Space School Partnership (SPACESHIP) was established in 2004 for the sole purpose of creating space exploration-themed public schools. The first schools, called Space Exploration Academy (SEA) and Junior Space Exploration Academy (JSEA), are located in West Oakland and serve students in grades 6-12.

SSOAR is the governing organization for SEA, and UC Berkeley and the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation contribute to the governance of SEA. NASA serves as an advisory partner to SEA.
