Introduction to Bioastronautics, and Human Space Exploration

University of California, Berkeley
Department of Bioengineering

Bio-Engineering 155

In collaboration with the Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, Berkeley, SSOAR has developed an undergraduate curriculum that describes the environmental, physiological, and technical challenges of human space exploration. Introduction to Bioastronautics was first offered in January 2002 and is now a permanent course that satisfies graduation requirements for most science, mathematics, and engineering majors at UC Berkeley.

Introduction to Bioastronautics wasdesigned by SSOAR co-founders, Camron Gorguinpour and Raven LeClair, with assistance from Dr. Thomas Budinger. The course has drawn students from 25 academic majors and has matched the university's racial/ethnic demographics.

Critical Elements of the Course Include:

Interactive Instruction Project-Based Learning
Field Trips to NASA Centers

Guest Lecture Series

The Course is Divided into Four “Phases”:

   1. The Space Environment
   2. Impacts of Microgravity on Human Physiology
   3. Life Support Systems and Countermeasures
   4. Mission Logistics and Planning

WHAT DO STUDENTS SAY ABOUT THIS CLASS?

[I] really got a chance to see how things get done...What it feels like to be a researcher.”

                                                                  “WOW. JUST WOW!”

 “MY FAVORITE CLASS EVER.”
